TOP 5 THINGS TO DO AT BLACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON NATIONAL PARK
Exploring every National park has become a bucket list item for us. We are lucky enough to have FOUR in our beautiful state of Colorado. Here is our guide and the top 5 things to see at Black Canyon of the Gunnison.
Depending on where you are coming from, you can enter from the North or South rim entrance. We were coming from Montrose so we entered at the South rim. Although there are similar viewpoints, we have heard the North rim is less busy and has less stops.
1) The South Rim Drive
The South rim drive is 7 miles long with 12 overlooks, visitor center and campground available to guests. This gorgeous drive provides jaw dropping views, and some interesting geology. Standing at the edge of the canyon, taking in the staggering cliffs and ancient rock faces is quite extraordinary. Most overlooks require a short hike to reach the viewing platform. They can start to look similar so no need to stop at all if you don’t want to. Be advised, there is no shade on these trails so AM is the best time. Our top stops below;
Tomichi Point Overlook
Cedar Point Overlook
Sunset View Overlook
2) Hikes
Rim Rock Nature trail - approximately 2 miles round trip and a great moderate hike to start the day off. The trail is pretty flat and offers great views of the canyon and river below. This trail starts at the campground and goes to the visitor center. (downloadable pdf below)
Cedar point nature trail - very easy and short, but takes you to two amazing overlooks. You can also see the famous painted wall (tallest cliff in Colorado), which is truly breathtaking.
Oak Flat Loop Trail - if you’re looking for something a bit more challenging, this hike is a good one to try. This 1.5 mile loop allows you to explore below the rim. It can get narrow and has some steep slopes. Counterclockwise is the preferred direction.
3) Wildlife viewing
From rim to river, I was shocked how many different habitats and animals thrive in this park! Collared lizards, short-tailed weasels and mule deer are often seen along the rim. We haven’t been lucky enough to witness yet, but it is said the bighorn sheep climb the steep slopes of the inner wall! I would freak out! You may also see a Peregrine Falcon (the fastest bird in the world) or the beautiful golden eagle soaring between the canyon. Although sightings are rare, river otters, mountain lions and black bears also inhabit this area. Keep your eyes peeled!
4) Become a junior ranger!
Who doesn’t want to help preserve and protect our National parks? Highly recommend for you and your kiddos! Although this program is meant for kids, all ages can participate. It’s honestly a great way to interact and explore while learning about nature and wildlife. An activity booklet is provided to guide you through the park and afterwards, a pledge is taken and you receive your own Junior Ranger badge. It’s seriously too cute!
5) Black Canyon Astronomy Festival
AstroFest is an annual festival to celebrate the starry skies of Black Canyon. Daytime activities and stargazing opportunities for three days! Black Canyon has exceptional skies and actually was certified as an international dark sky park in 2015. Don’t forget your telescope and red flashlight!
"The relentless and powerful roar of the river echoing off the walls adds a dramatic background effect that reminds you of the forces of nature that created the very cliffs you're climbing...The canyon, with its many secrets, continues to inspire and motivate me to return every year and experience the magic found in the wild places beyond the boundaries of society."
